Venice Destination Wedding (with a Twist) // Valentina + Lorenzo

Posted by Edward Winter

October 13

Does it get any better than shooting portraits while floating in a gondola in Venice? This Venice destination wedding beautifully shows why I’m passionate about wedding photography and the opportunities that photography can create in life. Valentina discovered my work through a casual personal Instagram post of my wife standing on the Ponte Vecchio in Florence. Valentina and her fiancé, Lorenzo, are Italians and live in the heart of Florence.

A Destination Wedding with a Twist

Somewhat ironically, they had originally planned on a big destination wedding in New York City. However, nine months into planning, Covid crashed into their plans and they were forced to reschedule their wedding… again, and again, and again—during which time they had their baby girl, Cora! They had almost given up on having a wedding entirely when they changed everything and decided on a micro-destination wedding at the courthouse in Venice, Italy, with dinner for a small group at Da Ivo, a famous little restaurant on a canal. When Valentina informed me of their plans to postpone the wedding once more and change the country, I said, “HELL YEAH!”. I’ve always wanted to shoot in Venice, and I felt it was equally important to stick with my clients after having gone through so many postponements.

Venice Courthouse Vows

Like any destination wedding, I always arrive a few days early to get over the jet lag, explore the city a bit, and scout locations for photography. On the wedding day, we planned to meet at first light to welcome the day with a few sunrise portraits in San Marco Square, and then it was off to the hotel for customary wedding day prep. Instead of doing a typical first look with Lorenzo alone, they decided to share the experience with all their friends and family waiting together for Valentina’s arrival at the courthouse—adorable.

I’ve photographed my fair share of courthouse weddings in NYC—most every photographer has. Courthouse weddings are a wonderfully democratizing experience that transcends social class and customs, becoming a hallmark NYC experience for many young couples. It was thrilling to see how Italy experiences the same custom, with witnesses and guests humbly celebrating one of life’s greatest joys. Even with the language barrier, we easily find mutual understanding in these moments.

Once the ceremony concluded, we shot a few family pics in front of the courthouse. Then we hopped onto a gondola for the feast that awaited us at Da Ivo, a tiny little restaurant accessible by gondola, whose walls are decorated with selfies of guests including George Clooney, Elton John, and Matt Damon, just to name a few. This perfect little wedding in Venice (and the meal!), for which planning had undergone over years of turmoil, would become one of the most memorable experiences to date. Warmest hugs and best wishes, Valentina & Lorenzo!

A Quick Guide to Planning Your Venice Destination Wedding

Once, Lord Byron described Venice as “a fairy city of the heart,” and today, many hearts find their forever in the enchantingly romantic city of Venice, Italy. If you’ve always dreamt of celebrating the most special day of your life in a destination that showcases a unique blend of history, charm, and romance, consider taking your vows to Venice.

But first, there are a few things to keep in mind if you want to make the most of your Venice visit. After experiencing the magic of this romantic city firsthand, I’ll guide you through the best times of year for a Venice destination wedding, fun activities to experience, where to eat, and where to stay.

Best Times for a Venice Wedding

Every season brings out a different shade of beauty in Venice. However, the most popular—and arguably the best times—for a wedding in Venice is spring (April through June) and fall (September and October). The temperature is warm but comfortable during these months, and the city is vibrant, with blooming flowers in spring and wrapped in warm autumn hues in fall.

Summer (July and August) is the peak tourist season, and it can get uncomfortably warm and humid. (Imagine New York in July with more humidity and less air conditioning.) So, while the weather may be perfect for a waterfront wedding, prepare for crowded streets and higher prices. Winters in Venice can be chilly and humid, making it less ideal for outdoor festivities. Still, they offer a unique charm with fewer tourists and the intriguing spectacle of ‘aqua alta’ or high water. You’ve probably seen pictures of St. Mark’s Square when it’s flooded. Be sure to pack tall rain boots if you want to brave it.

Things to do in Venice

When in Venice, a sunset gondola ride should be at the top of your list. This quintessential Venetian experience becomes even more magical at sunset, offering a stunning backdrop of a golden sky and shimmering waters – perfect for those pre-wedding photos or a romantic post-wedding moment.

Explore the architectural marvels of Venice, like St. Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace, and lose yourselves in the labyrinthine streets while discovering hidden gems throughout the city. For art enthusiasts, Venice is home to world-renowned museums and galleries like Gallerie dell ‘Accademia.

If you’re a New Yorker, Venice is easy! You can walk from one side to the other in less than an hour. So, bring your walking shoes and start exploring.

Places to Eat During Your Venice Destination Wedding

Italy is synonymous with delicious food, and Venice is no different. For a memorable and photographic dining experience, visit Ristorante Quadri, which has stunning views of St. Mark’s Square and a culinary journey through Venetian cuisine. For seafood lovers, Osteria alle Testiere is a must-visit. And don’t miss out on the traditional Venetian Cicchetti (small snacks) at local Bacari (wine bars). There are quite a few hole-in-the-wall eateries you can try throughout your stay.

Where to Stay in Venice

Speaking of which, Venice has accommodations to suit every budget and style. The Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, is a go-to for those wanting luxury and classic Venetian charm. For a more intimate boutique experience, consider the Ca Maria Adele, known for its intriguing decor and Italian hospitality.
