It’s the chaos you’ll never forget, captured in a frame that feels as alive as the moment itself.
Get in touchA Storybook Summer Wedding in the Hudson Valley
Tucked away in Sloatsburg off a bustling street is the quiet property of Valley Rock Inn & Mountain Club. Elegant and full of summer roses, it was a beautiful backdrop for Hannah and Bradley’s wedding. The only thing lovelier than the setting was the bride herself—effortless, grounded, and glowing from the inside out.
I spent the weekend with them, getting to know their families during their rehearsal dinner. The amount of joyful laughs, hugs, and tears was too many to count. It was clear that family and friendship were woven into every part of their lives; everyone’s love for them was absolutely palpable.
The couple wanted their photos to feel both candid and artistic—a true reflection of who they are. I was excited to experiment with my tilt-shift lens, which lent a dreamy, film-like quality to their portraits. As a little surprise, I brought along my instant camera throughout the day, capturing small moments between the planned portraits and gifting them a take-away album at the end of the night. There’s something special about leaving a wedding with something tangible—a keepsake that holds the spirit of the day while the digital images are still being curated.
Gorgeous Garden Scenes Galore
The property photographed beautifully. There was no shortage of unique nooks and garden backdrops for portraits. We had an easy, playful session moving through the gardens, pausing by the ivy-covered walls and the pool that anchors the rose garden. Their ceremony was filled to the brim with guests, all clad in vibrant summer dresses that mirrored the color and joy of the day. The canopy of trees over the ceremony garden provided a cool, dappled shade—a natural cathedral of green that made everything feel calm and intimate despite the crowd.
My favorite part of Valley Rock Inn has to be the rose ivy garden with its central pool. It photographs like a dream, especially during golden hour. The way the light filters through the leaves and hits the water gives portraits a painterly glow. As the sun dipped, guests moved to the tented reception area where the band struck up the first dance tune, and the dance floor stayed full until the very last song.
Hannah and Bradley’s day was full of warmth and heart—a perfect match for the dreamy ambiance of Valley Rock Inn. Keep scrolling for photo inspiration and more information about this unique Hudson Valley wedding venue.
About Valley Rock Inn & Mountain Club
Valley Rock Inn & Mountain Club is a hidden gem in the lower Hudson Valley, just an hour north of New York City. Located in Sloatsburg, New York, this venue blends old-world charm with modern, eco-conscious design. It’s an idyllic escape for couples looking to host a destination-style wedding weekend close to the city.
The property spans several acres and includes beautifully restored 19th-century guest houses, green gardens, and modern event spaces. What makes Valley Rock Inn unique is its balance of luxury and an organic, lived-in feeling. Every corner is intentionally designed, yet it never feels overly polished or pretentious. It’s the kind of place where you can sip coffee under climbing roses in the morning and dance under the stars at night.
Getting There: The Ease of a Weekend Getaway
You can’t beat the accessibility of Valley Rock Inn. Guests can drive or take the train from Manhattan in about an hour, which makes it ideal for weddings that draw friends and family from both the city and surrounding areas.
Despite its proximity to New York City, once you arrive, it feels worlds away. Sloatsburg sits at the edge of Harriman State Park, surrounded by forested hills, hiking trails, and streams. Many couples use the weekend as an opportunity to turn their wedding into a mini-retreat, encouraging guests to explore the nearby trails, farmers’ markets, or cozy cafés in nearby historic Tuxedo Park.
The Setting: Modern Design Meets Nature at Valley Rock Inn
Nature and design intertwine seamlessly at Valley Rock Inn. The property features a series of interconnected gardens, stone pathways, and restored structures, offering a variety of photo looks, all within walking distance.
-
The Rose Garden & Reflecting Pool:
This is the showstopper. It’s framed by ivy-covered walls and layered blooms that change with the season. During golden hour, the sunlight filters in from the west, illuminating the garden in soft, warm light. This space works beautifully for portraits, cocktail hour, or even an intimate ceremony. -
The Ceremony Garden:
Set under a canopy of trees, this space feels private and serene. The natural shade keeps guests comfortable even in the summer months. The wooden arbor and surrounding greenery create a simple yet cinematic setting for vows. -
The Courtyard & Event Lawn:
Many couples host their cocktail hour or outdoor dinner here. It’s open yet enclosed by the surrounding buildings and gardens, giving a sense of community and intimacy. -
The Tented Pavilion:
The reception tent feels like a natural extension of the grounds—airy, white, and adaptable to any design aesthetic. For Hannah and Bradley’s reception, it was alive with music and color, with guests laughing, dancing, and clinking glasses beneath the soft glow of string lights.
Every area of Valley Rock Inn tells its own story. As a photographer, I love that no two weddings look alike here—the light shifts throughout the day, the gardens change with the season, and the property offers endless creative perspectives.
On-Site Accommodations
Valley Rock Inn offers on-site lodging, which makes it ideal for weekend-long celebrations. The inn’s guest houses are thoughtfully restored, blending rustic architecture with modern comforts.
Couples often rent out the entire property for their wedding weekend, turning it into a private retreat for close family and friends. The Farm House, The Verandas, and Guest Cottages each have their own distinct personality, with cozy rooms, fireplaces, and inviting common spaces. View all of the guest houses here.
There’s also an outdoor pool and a wellness center, offering guests a chance to relax between events. The atmosphere is calm and refreshing—perfect for morning yoga, a pre-wedding swim, or a quiet coffee before the festivities begin.
Food & Drink: A Farm-to-Table Philosophy
Food is at the heart of Valley Rock Inn’s experience. The property’s owner, Michael Bruno (founder of 1stdibs), designed the space with sustainability and community in mind. Their farm-to-table philosophy extends through their restaurants and event menus, which feature locally sourced ingredients and seasonal produce.
The Valley Rock Cantina and Market—located just next door—often caters events or provides weekend meals for guests staying on-site. Think beautifully plated dishes that taste as good as they look, paired with wines from small producers and craft cocktails that match the tone of the day.
For couples who love food and design, this venue is a dream: every meal is intentionally crafted.
Planning Your Valley Rock Inn Wedding
Because the venue offers so many flexible spaces, there’s a lot of room for customization. Whether you’re planning a 50-person garden dinner or a 200-person tented celebration, the staff and vendor team are experienced in bringing unique visions to life.
A few tips from our experience photographing here:
-
Consider the light.
Golden hour hits differently here. Plan your portraits just before sunset in the rose garden or near the reflecting pool. The surrounding mountains soften the light beautifully, creating that natural film-like glow we love. -
Embrace the natural elements.
Let the greenery and garden architecture do the heavy lifting. Valley Rock Inn doesn’t need much in terms of added décor—simple floral arrangements, textured linens, and candlelight all pair perfectly with the venue’s aesthetic. -
Stay for the weekend.
The property is designed for extended stays. Hosting your rehearsal dinner on-site allows for a more relaxed schedule and creates a cohesive story throughout your weekend photos. -
Leverage the surrounding area.
Sloatsburg and nearby Tuxedo Park offer great options for welcome drinks or farewell brunches. Many couples even plan a short morning hike with their wedding party the day before or after the wedding.
From a Photographer’s Perspective
As photographers, Valley Rock Inn is a dream canvas. The variety of textures and tones—stone, greenery, water, wood—creates endless opportunities for depth and storytelling. The property is walkable, which means portraits can flow naturally without long breaks between locations.
The gardens lend themselves to editorial imagery, while the courtyard and pavilion allow for lively, candid documentation once the party begins. For Hannah and Bradley, we leaned into a mix of soft, romantic frames and bold, motion-filled shots during the reception. Their personalities shone through in every photo, framed by a venue that felt both timeless and alive.
And because forested hills surround Valley Rock Inn, even the backdrops beyond the property line—like the mountain roads and trailheads nearby—make for stunning pre-wedding or day-after portrait opportunities.
