NYC Courthouse Elopement Guide // Moni + Pep

Moni & Pep: A City Hall Love Story

When we planned their courthouse wedding photos, Moni and Pep were clear: they wanted an editorial vibe, but nothing stuffy. They’re playful, kind, and fun-loving, and their personalities needed to shine just as much as their outfits. The result? Pure art.

They leaned into a bold black, white, and red color palette that popped against the crowd while still harmonizing with the urban backdrop. Moni rocked a chic dress, fiery red heels, and a bouquet that felt wild and whimsical. Pep matched her energy in a sleek all-black suit. Together, they were a true dynamic duo—effortless, stylish, and unapologetically themselves.

The camera loved them, but more importantly, their look and vibe transformed a three-minute ceremony into a full-day celebration.

Getting married at the New York City courthouse is iconic. For generations, couples from all over the world have chosen City Hall as the place to officially begin their next chapter. It’s quick, it’s simple, and it’s quintessentially New York. But here’s the best part: a courthouse wedding does not have to be boring or impersonal. In fact, with the right approach, you can make it one of the most stylish, memorable, and joyful days of your life.

A New Take on New York City Courthouse Weddings

That’s exactly what Moni and Pep did. They wanted something short and sweet, but they also wanted to do it in style—and let’s just say they turned heads in the best way when they walked out of City Hall. Their day was high-fashion, full of personality, and proof that a civil ceremony can be just as extraordinary as a ballroom wedding.

How to Elevate Your NYC Courthouse Wedding

Dress Like You Mean It

The ceremony may only last a few minutes, but your outfits will make it feel unforgettable. Lean into bold fashion choices, whether that’s a chic suit, a statement dress, or unexpected pops of color. City Hall is the perfect stage for experimenting with something modern and stylish.

Create Space for Artful Photography

The ceremony moves quickly—three minutes in a small room with pale pink walls and a clerk who’s done this thousands of times. But the narrative is yours to shape. Instead of rushing home after, linger in the city with someone who sees you not just as a subject, but as a collaborator.

Invest in a photographer whose work resonates with your sensibility—one who values real moments over posed perfection. The right photographer will give you space to breathe, to laugh, to let the day unfold as it wants to. Together, you can create visual poetry out of subway platforms, stairwells, or the golden hum of afternoon light on Foley Square. These aren’t just wedding photos. They’re a timeless homage to who you are, right now.

Bring a Bouquet or Statement Accessory

Flowers, jewelry, sunglasses, or even a bold lipstick shade can elevate your look instantly. These little details show up beautifully in photos and help personalize an otherwise neutral backdrop.

Plan a Post-Ceremony Adventure

The ceremony may be short, but your wedding day doesn’t have to end at the courthouse door. Grab champagne at a rooftop bar, take photos in Central Park, hop on the subway in full wedding attire, or book a dinner at your favorite neighborhood restaurant. The city becomes your reception hall.

Keep It Playful

The courthouse process can feel a little procedural—numbers, paperwork, and waiting rooms. Bring joy into it. Laugh, hold hands, chat with other couples in line. Let the day feel lighthearted instead of transactional.

How to Get Married at NYC City Hall

If you’re inspired to plan your own courthouse wedding, here’s the practical step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Get Your Marriage License

-Apply through Project Cupid (online or in-person).
-Pay the $35 fee.
-Attend your appointment (virtual or in-person). Both partners must bring a valid photo ID.
-After approval, you’ll receive your marriage license the same day.
-Timing note: Your ceremony must happen between 24 hours and 60 days after receiving the license.

Step 2: Schedule Your Ceremony

-Book online through Project Cupid: choose “Marriage Ceremony (in person).”
-Ceremonies are held Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Slots are released approximately 2–3 weeks in advance.
-You’ll need: Both partners with photo IDs; Hard copy of your marriage license; One witness with photo ID; $35 ceremony fee (credit card); Each couple may bring up to 4 guests total (including the witness and/or photographer).

Day-of Ceremony at City Hall

-Arrive on time (or a little early).
-Go through security, check in, and receive a number.
-When called, present IDs, license, and pay the $35 certificate fee.
-Enter the chapel for your ceremony—it lasts about 3 minutes.
-Afterward, you’ll receive your marriage certificate, which is your official proof of marriage.

Extra Notes for Your NYC Courthouse Wedding

-Bring a folder to keep your documents safe.
-The Manhattan City Clerk’s Office has a festive, bustling vibe, with flowers and photographers often outside.
-If you or your partner hold dual citizenship, you can request an extended marriage certificate for international recognition.

✅ And that’s it: two appointments, two fees, one witness, and you’re officially married in New York City.

Make the Ordinary Magical, & Honor the Moment (However Brief)

A courthouse wedding may be quick on paper, but it doesn’t have to feel small. With thoughtful choices—fashion, photography, and a little intention—you can turn a civil ceremony into a stylish, unforgettable celebration.

Moni and Pep proved that love + style + a touch of playfulness is the recipe for a City Hall wedding that feels every bit as special as the grandest ballroom affair. So, if you’re heading to NYC City Hall to say, “I do,” don’t just show up. Show up in style.

It’s the chaos you’ll never forget, captured in a frame that feels as alive as the moment itself.
